Every December, the risks on our roads rise sharply. Nights out increase, Christmas parties fill the calendar, and more people than ever make the mistake of thinking they are “fine to drive”. The reality could not be more different, and the statistics tell a sobering story.
This is why December sees the return of our None For The Road campaign across all Shoal sites. This year’s message is simple: arrive alive. Do not drink or drug drive.

The Reality of Drink and Drug Driving in the UK
Drink and drug driving remain two of the leading causes of fatal road collisions. In 2023 alone, the numbers paint a critical picture:
- 260 people were killed in collisions where at least one driver was over the drink–drive limit
- 213 fatal collisions involved drivers with impairment drugs detected
- An estimated 6,310 people were injured or killed in drink-driving related incidents
- The highest-risk age group was 25 to 34 years
- Common substances detected included cocaine, cannabis, morphine and ketamine
These figures represent preventable loss and long-term harm for families, workplaces and communities.
What Our None For The Road Campaign Includes
As part of our December campaign, we have placed posters, toolbox talks and table talkers across all Shoal sites. These act as simple, visible reminders that help set expectations and drive awareness at every break area, welfare point and waiting zone.
These explain:
- What drink and drug driving actually means
- Why even small amounts of alcohol or drugs impair reaction time, judgement, coordination and vision
- The key signs that someone should not drive
- Practical steps people can take instead, such as planning transport or nominating a sober driver
- How workers can support others by speaking up or arranging safer alternatives
They also present clear statistics from 2023 and 2024, reinforcing the scale of the issue and the preventable nature of these incidents.
By placing these in high-traffic areas, we make sure the message is seen repeatedly throughout the day, creating constant reinforcement of safe behaviour.
Why Even a Small Amount Can Cost a Life
The information presented in the table talkers makes one thing clear. Both alcohol and drugs, including legal prescription medication, reduce a driver’s ability to notice hazards and react in time. Even small amounts can cause dangerous overconfidence or impaired decision-making.
Driving impaired is never a small misjudgement. It is a high-risk decision that can change lives forever.

A Workplace Culture Where Everyone Goes Home Safe
None For The Road is more than a seasonal campaign. It reflects Shoal’s belief that safety, wellbeing and behavioural awareness must be part of everyday site culture.
With clear information, visible reminders, early intervention and trained medics, we help create workplaces where people look after themselves and their colleagues, making safer choices both on site and on the road.
This December, we ask every worker across our projects to take the message seriously:
Arrive alive.
Do not drink or drug drive.
None For The Road.
